How Often Should You Really Change Your Oil?

June 24, 2026 5 min readBy T&H Tire And Auto Service

The old "every 3,000 miles" rule is outdated for most modern engines. Here is what actually determines your ideal oil change interval.

Conventional oil: every 3,000-5,000 miles

If your vehicle uses conventional oil, plan on a change every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. Conventional oil breaks down faster under heat and friction than synthetic blends, so it needs more frequent replacement to keep protecting your engine internals.

Synthetic blend: every 5,000-7,500 miles

A synthetic blend splits the difference on cost and performance, and most manufacturers rate it for 5,000 to 7,500 miles between changes. This is the most common oil grade for daily commuter vehicles driving around Nashville and Old Hickory.

Full synthetic: up to 7,500-10,000 miles

Full synthetic oil resists heat breakdown far better and can often go 7,500 to 10,000 miles between changes, depending on your owner's manual. It costs more per change but the extended interval and superior engine protection often make it the better value over the life of the vehicle.

Severe driving conditions shorten every interval

Short trips under 10 minutes, frequent stop-and-go traffic, towing, and extreme heat all count as "severe" driving conditions in your owner's manual — and they all shorten the safe interval between oil changes, sometimes significantly. If most of your driving is around town rather than highway miles, lean toward the shorter end of your oil's recommended range.

When in doubt, check the dipstick and ask us

Oil that looks dark brown to black, feels gritty between your fingers, or sits below the fill line all mean it is time for a change regardless of mileage. Stop by T&H Tire And Auto Service and we will check your oil condition and top off fluids in minutes, at no charge, even if you are not ready for a full service.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions our technicians hear about oil change.

For most modern engines, no. The 3,000-mile rule was based on older conventional oil and older engines. Synthetic and synthetic-blend oils last much longer, and most modern vehicles can go 5,000 to 10,000 miles between changes.
