Bad Alternator: Signs, Testing, and Replacement

August 7, 2026 6 min readBy T&H Tire And Auto Service

Dim lights, a dead battery, and a dashboard warning light can all point to a failing alternator. Learn the symptoms and how the charging system is tested.

How the charging system works

The battery provides the burst of power to start the engine. Once the engine is running, the alternator takes over — it generates electricity to recharge the battery and power everything electrical, from the headlights and ignition to the radio and climate control. If the alternator fails, the car runs on battery power alone until that battery is depleted.

Signs of a failing alternator

Dim or flickering headlights, a battery warning light on the dash, a battery that keeps dying, slow power windows, a burning rubber smell from a seized pulley, and unusual electrical behavior are all common signs. You may also hear a whining or grinding noise from the alternator bearing before it fails completely.

Battery or alternator — which is the problem?

A dead battery and a bad alternator cause similar symptoms, so testing is essential. A charging system test measures battery voltage, alternator output, and the diode pattern. If the alternator output is low or the diodes are failing, the alternator needs service — not just a new battery.

What damages an alternator

Heat and vibration are the biggest enemies. A loose or worn drive belt, a failing belt tensioner, a battery with a shorted cell, and aftermarket high-draw accessories can all overwork the alternator and shorten its life. Replacing a worn belt and keeping the battery healthy protects the alternator.

Replacement and prevention

Alternator replacement includes removing the drive belt, disconnecting the battery, swapping the unit, and verifying charging voltage afterward. Have the belt and tensioner inspected at the same time. If your lights dim at idle or the battery warning light comes on, stop by T&H Tire And Auto Service for a charging system test before you get stranded.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions our technicians hear about alternator.

Most alternators last 80,000 to 150,000 miles or about 7 to 10 years. Heat, electrical loads, and a weak battery can shorten their lifespan. Have the charging system tested during routine service once your alternator is over 5 years old.
